Spider veins, or telangiectasias if you want to be fancy, are those tiny purple or red blood vessels/broken capillaries found on the surface of the skin, usually on the face around the nose and cheeks, and or on the legs around the ankles. They are called spider veins because they resemble spider webs, either appearing in small masses or as short jagged lines. While not a medically serious condition, they can be cosmetically unattractive causing people to be somewhat self-conscious about their appearance.
The main causes of spider veins & broken capillaries are prolonged exposure to the sun, aging, genetics, trauma, certain medical conditions, and our own bad habits like smoking and drinking. Spider veins or broken capillaries can cause your skin to look older or flushed. Spider veins can also form on the legs primarily due to gravity interfering with the veins ability to efficiently pump blood back to the heart.
Guelph Laser offers two types of spider vein treatments: Laser & Sclerotherapy. The first treatment is Spider Vein Removal. Utilizing a laser, we are able to provide safe and effective treatment options for the removal of spider veins on the face and legs by delivering a precise dosage of energy to each vein. The light energy is absorbed by the blood vessels, causing the coagulation of the blood vessel, which is subsequently absorbed by your body. Laser Genesis and IPL Photorejuvenationare also very effective in removing spider veins or broken capillaries from the face.
On the legs, we more often use Sclerotherapy as the spider vein treatment of choice. This medical procedure involves an injection of a solution directly into the spider vein causing it to swell and stick together and the blood to clot. Over time the vessel turns to scar tissue and fades from view.
